Do you own a car? If you do, you are paying for not only gas, but also insurance, maintenance cost, and parking and toll fees. If your car is not paid off, then there is also the monthly payment to consider.
These expenses can add up. You might think it’s worth it in order to have transportation. Yet, how much use are you really getting out of it? How much time is it just parked in one spot?
This is particularly true if your family has more than one vehicle.
Or if you have one car for your daily commute but keep a larger vehicle so that you can pick up furniture or home improvement supplies from the hardware store. The secondary vehicle is only used once in a while, but you are still paying all the associated expenses.
The reality is that cars are expensive. Car-sharing services allow you to make some money if you own a vehicle or can also help you save money if you only use a car occasionally. It’s a lot less expensive to just pay for using a vehicle when you need it vs. paying for one 24/7 whether you use it or not.
Car sharing particularly makes sense if you live in an urban area for a variety of reasons:
– There is a younger demographic, many of whom do not own cars. Know your demographic. Give incentives to rent from you. If your target are local renters
– There are going to be tourists who will want to borrow vehicles
– Even those who own a vehicle may not have larger vehicles for hauling stuff around
One question you may have – what is the difference between a car sharing service and getting a rental car?
One difference is that a car sharing service will allow you to use a vehicle for short periods of time, such as for a few hours, vs. having to keep, and pay, for 24 or more hours.
How do car sharing services typically work?
You use an app to reserve a vehicle. It can be a compact car, a truck, or an SUV, depending on what you need and what’s available. You borrow the vehicle for a specific period of time and then return it when you’re done.
Different car sharing services will have their own specific features, so make sure you understand what you are signing up for beforehand.
For example, Turo is peer-to-peer. As a P2P car sharing service, it operates in a way that is similar to AirBnB, but for cars rather than dwellings. Owners are able to set their own rates, and you might find interesting and unusual options such as Tesla. GetAround is another P2P car sharing service. What makes it unique is that Uber has partnered with it, allowing users to rent cars using that app.
